2010 Do the Du' Duathlon

Short and Long Course Duathlon
April 10, 2010 - Holly Springs, NC

The 2nd Annual Britfit’s ‘Do the Du’ Kids event had a strong field of over 60 kids this year.

With weather conditions were perfect with low 60s to start, Carolina blue skies and no humidity, the transition area was bustling with excited and nervous faces. Kids from 5 years to 15 gave their all, finishing with hard earned smiles. The run course again proved to be flat and fast. And even though the bike course does have some hills all kids were able to make it!

Each one got to break their own finishers tape and proudly wear their finisher medals. As always the generous help from volunteers, medics and police made the day another successful day. With their help out on the course, kids were kept safe and with some extra pushes up the hill, all came home safe and sound. Over $300 was raised and donated to the Wasley family to help with their daughter Megan’s medical needs. For more information go to www.supportthewasleys.com.

Looks like this event is here to stay so see you there next year!

Do the Du!

Short and Long Course Duathlon
August 8, 2009 - Holly Springs, NC

Holly Springs, NC-- On August 8th 2009, the sun stayed behind the clouds as Britfit Training and Coaching and the Town of Holly Springs Parks and Recreation, successfully kicked off the Town’s very first kids duathlon event. Holly Springs Police and Safety departments were on board with providing their help to traffic management and checking on a few participants who got a little over zealous in the spirit of the race!

Fifty four kids, whose ages ranged from five to fifteen years of age ran, biked and ran their hearts out. By the smiles and for some, the determination on their faces it was obvious they were having a good time. The race was sanctioned through USA Triathlon organization and offered two choices of distances; long: 1 mile/4 miles/1 mile and short: 0.5 mile/2 miles/0.5 miles. All finishers got their very own finishers’ medal as they ran through the finishing tape, held up for each one as they crossed the line.

The course consisted of a flat run around Womble Park and a hilly bike in a nearby neighborhood. Experienced course volunteers guided the kids safely through the event, ensuring no- one went off course or had any mechanical issues. David Mallard from Holly Springs Parks and Recreation commented on how impressed he was with the determination shown by some kids he had seen out ‘training’ on the course in the weeks coming up to the event.

Even though there was no timing or awards for this event some kids needed to know they were prepared for their big day. After the race, Director Jackie Miller commented on how satisfying it had been to see it all come together and to see the kids’ hot and happy faces after their event. She said she hoped not only had it made a tremendous impression on the kid’s own self esteem (from the giant sense of accomplishment they felt), but also hoped it would transfer over and inspire families to move more.

Jackie said “taking part in a multi sport event such as this or a triathlon makes the participant take responsibility for their goals and teaches self accountability. More and more kids are turning to multi sports as more events are being made available. Kids need more options for health and fitness as not all want to be part of a team. And there’s absolutely nothing wrong in that either.”

The North Carolina Chapter of the Special Olympics, with the focus on Wake County athletes will benefit from this event so it seems it was a win- win situation for many. The event will be held next year so watch this space!
